Royal Arena
The inauguration of the Royal Arena in Copenhagen was one of the most anticipated architecture events in the Danish capital. In February 2017, a Metallica rock concert celebrated the opening of this 35,000-m2 modern building, an event that immediately sold out at the new arena.
Designed specifically to host international concerts and sports events, the building has two main aspirations: create an attractive and flexible multifunctional arena, able to attract both a local and international audience; act as a catalyst for the growth of the district and the entire city.
From an architecture point of view, the arena has an open ground floor and a first-floor level. The latter has a semi-transparent façade topped with gold-coloured wooden fins, which provide an undulating effect to the circular building. The façade also allows spectators to look out and curious by passers to have a look inside.
The structure offers multiple public gathering areas for everyday activities. It has been conceived as a reference point for city life, improving the living experience in the surrounding areas.
The architecture project of the Royal Arena has been received with great favour and has also been awarded a number of prices: Jury winner Architizer A+ Awards for Sport & Recreation-Stadium/Arena, Architizer A+ Jury Award 2017 for Best Stadium.
